This chapter explains how to meet your obligation to provide a working environment that is safe and without risks to workers’ health.

Your health and safety obligations to provide a safe working environment

As an employer, health and safety legislation in all jurisdictions requires you to provide a working environment that is safe and without risks to workers’ health.

Definition: Working Environment

The working environment is the physical environment surrounding your workers while they are at work. It includes factors such as temperature, ventilation and lighting.

The Work Health and Safety (WHS) Regulations, which apply in all jurisdictions except Victoria, outline specific obligations regarding the general work environment.

Tip: Health and safety regulations in Victoria are less detailed, but they still require you to maintain a safe work environment. As a rule, it is best to follow the obligations outlined in the WHS Regulations.
