First aid

Last updated October 2023

This chapter explains your first aid obligations, including the requirement to provide first aid kits and trained first aiders who are able to respond to a medical emergency.

When is first aid required?

Definition: First Aid

First aid is the provision of initial health care and basic life support to someone who suffers an injury or illness.

Ensuring that first aid is provided to ill or injured workers is an essential part of your duty of care.

If an incident occurs in your workplace, you must ensure that first aid is provided until either:

  • the injured person recovers; or
  • more advanced care arrives.
Important: The rapid application of first aid to an ill or injured worker can reduce the severity of their illness or injury. It can also reduce the amount of rehabilitation required later.
