I have been told we need a certain number of fire extinguishers per square metre of our work shed, and we need to carry a certain number in our work trailers. How can I find this exact information for Western Australia?
The fire safety requirements for businesses in Western Australia are set out in the Occupational Safety and Health Regulations 1996 (WA). Specifically, the obligations for fire extinguishers and fire blankets are set out at regulation 3.9(1).
As you will see, regulation 3.9(1) incorporates Australian Standard 2444, which you will also need to review to ensure your business is complying with its fire safety requirements. In addition to regulation 3.9(1), this standard sets out the criteria for selecting portable fire extinguishers and fire blankets, as well as specifying the requirements for their application, location and distribution.
Please note, these obligations apply to the workplace, which the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1984 defines as “a place, whether or not in an aircraft, ship, vehicle, building, or other structure, where employees or self-employed persons work or are likely to be in the course of their work”. Therefore, your obligation to provide fire extinguishers and fire blankets will extend to both your work shed and your work trailers.
