Are there requirements for where fire extinguishers are located?

Q: Are there requirements for where fire extinguishers are located? For example, do they have to have a clearance zone?

A: The NSW Fire and Rescue website (www.fire.nsw.gov.au) provides that if you are considering making changes to your building’s scheduled fire safety measures, which are enforceable by law, you must first seek council approval.

Regarding the location of fire extinguishers, they state that each fire extinguisher should be located in a conspicuous, readily accessible location. Fire and Rescue NSW recommends that a surrounding clearance of a minimum of 1,000 millimetres (or 1 metre) be maintained around each fire extinguisher.
