Reset and get set for a safe new year

As the year draws to a close and your team enjoys a break (if they can), keep in mind the importance to refocus the team on safety when they return.

While rejuvenating, a well-earned rest can sometimes lead to a reduced focus on safety when getting back into work.

So be sure to plan now to bring your team together in the new year and focus their attention on:

  • a refresher on the processes they will be undertaking;
  • a reminder of the safety systems; and
  • the importance of assessing risks before starting any hazardous tasks.

It is important to also bear in mind that, if your business does not have the full complement of workers return to the business at the same time, some workers may be stretched to cover absent workers. It also means that if you have key supervisors or experienced workers away for longer holidays, you will need to ensure that work can still be performed safely in their absence.

Some steps you can consider implementing to manage this situation include:

  • arranging a group meeting, morning tea or toolbox talk with as many of your workers as possible to remind them specifically of the safety processes your organisation has in place;
  • getting workers to take a short online re-induction to get them thinking about the organisation’s processes; and
  • if practicable, rotate senior supervisors to monitor work processes so no team is left unsupervised.

In short, your safety obligations don’t head out the door in December; they will still be in place upon your return to work. So rest now (if you can), but refocus on safety as soon as you return – and don’t forget the risks inherent in the holiday season, such as heat-related risks, fatigue and stress. As always, the Health & Safety Handbook is here to help you manage these risks.
